Divorce, Separation, Co-Parenting, and High-Conflict Family Dynamics
Separation and divorce can be among the most stressful experiences a family faces. Children, parents, and entire family systems often struggle with grief, anxiety, conflict, uncertainty, and major life transitions during and after separation.
I provide therapy for children, adolescents, adults, parents, and families navigating separation, divorce, co-parenting challenges, and high-conflict family situations. My goal is to help families reduce distress, improve communication, strengthen resilience, and support children's emotional well-being throughout the process.
Helping Children Navigate Divorce and Family Conflict
Children often experience a wide range of emotions during separation and divorce, including sadness, anxiety, anger, confusion, guilt, loyalty conflicts, and fear about the future. Some children struggle with transitions between households, changes in routines, differences in parenting styles, or ongoing parental conflict.
In therapy, I help children and adolescents:
-
Process feelings related to separation and divorce
-
Navigate transitions between households
-
Develop healthy coping skills
-
Improve emotion regulation
-
Reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms
-
Build resilience during family changes
-
Strengthen communication with parents and caregivers
-
Manage loyalty conflicts and divided feelings
-
Maintain healthy relationships with important caregivers
My approach is highly child-centered and focused on helping children adapt to family changes while minimizing the emotional impact of parental conflict whenever possible.
Supporting Parents Through Co-Parenting Challenges
I work with parents who are striving to create healthier co-parenting relationships despite significant stress, conflict, or disagreement. My goal is to help parents remain focused on their children's developmental and emotional needs while reducing patterns that may contribute to ongoing conflict.
Treatment may focus on:
-
Effective co-parenting strategies
-
Child-centered decision-making
-
Managing conflict and communication difficulties
-
Supporting children through transitions
-
Understanding children's emotional and developmental needs
-
Reducing anxiety and stress related to parenting after separation
-
Creating greater consistency across households when possible
Whenever appropriate, I encourage solutions that reduce conflict, support children's well-being, and minimize the emotional toll that prolonged disputes can have on families.
Working With Individuals Experiencing High-Conflict Separation and Divorce
I also work with adults navigating the emotional and psychological challenges that can arise during and after separation and divorce, including situations involving:
-
High-conflict relationships
-
Coercive control
-
Domestic violence
-
Emotional abuse
-
Financial abuse
-
Post-separation abuse
-
Litigation-related stress
-
Chronic conflict with a former partner
-
Anxiety, depression, and trauma related to relationship dynamics
These situations are often highly complex and emotionally overwhelming. Therapy can provide a supportive space to process experiences, strengthen coping skills, improve boundaries, and work toward recovery and stability.
Understanding the Complexities of Family Court
Over the course of my work with children, parents, and families, I have developed a strong understanding of the psychological and relational challenges that frequently arise in high-conflict divorce and family court matters. I understand how ongoing conflict can affect both parents and children and how difficult it can be to navigate these situations while trying to prioritize a child's well-being.
However, it is important to note that I am not a custody evaluator, parenting coordinator, mediator, guardian ad litem, or family law attorney. I do not make custody recommendations or provide legal advice.
My role is that of a therapist. I provide mental health treatment, support emotional well-being, help clients navigate challenging family circumstances, and advocate for my clients' therapeutic needs and psychological health within the scope of my professional role.
A Child-Focused and Collaborative Approach
Children generally do best when they are protected from adult conflict and supported by caring adults who prioritize their emotional needs. Whether I am working with a child, a parent, or an entire family system, my goal is to help families reduce conflict, strengthen relationships, improve coping skills, and support children's healthy development.
I strive to help families navigate separation and divorce with as much stability, resilience, and emotional well-being as possible, allowing children and parents alike to move forward with greater confidence and hope.
